Real Talk: Building Your Prospecting Game in Real Estate

Cultivate the Prospecting Habit

You gotta have a steady stream of clients to make it big in real estate, and that’s just facts. Getting clients isn’t rocket science – it’s all about grinding out those prospects day after day. Trust me, once you get that ball rolling, your business basically runs itself.

Start with Your Why

Like, sometimes you just lose track of what matters when you’re running around doing business stuff. Getting super clear about your purpose is key, ya know? Maybe you wanna get that financial freedom for your fam. Could be you’re trying to spend more time with the kids instead of being stuck at work. Or perhaps giving back to charities is your thing. Whatever it is, you need that purpose to be like your guiding star when things get messy, or else you’ll end up totally off track.

I was always tryna do something huge with my career but couldn’t quite figure it out until I stumbled across Simon Sinek’s book, Start With Why. Reading that book hit different – it straight up changed everything. Suddenly I realized helping other agents succeed was my whole purpose. That feeling when you make an impact on someone’s life? That’s what got me going. Once I figured that out, my business took off in ways I never thought possible.

Make a Commitment

You’ve got to be down for prospecting every single day if you want that momentum going strong. See, commitment is basically what turns your “maybe someday” into “doing it right now.” There’s people who talk about being great agents, and then there’s people who actually commit to it – and lemme tell you, the results speak for themselves. Breaking out of that self-sabotage cycle? That takes real commitment.

You can’t be playing around with this half-in, half-out stuff. When you’re committed, you stop making excuses about why you aren’t prospecting. Getting this habit going means being all about it, no questions asked. After I made that kind of promise to myself, there wasn’t any going back – it became part of who I am.

“Figure out what you’re committed to and stick with it. What happens if you don’t?” Think about why you’re doing all this. For me, it was about helping people out. Consider who you’ll be able to help by going all in on your business. Picture the impact on your family and life when you commit 100%. Then imagine what happens if you don’t commit. If you made that commitment to yourself and others, how would that change your income? How many more people could you help out?

Go Public With Your Commitment

You gotta tell people about your commitment – both to yourself and others. It’s wild how powerful making a public commitment can be, like the universe starts working with you to keep you on track. Get yourself an accountability buddy who’ll help you stay focused. Real talk – accountability is super important for success. It’s that missing piece that keeps you locked in on your commitment.

Here’s a pro tip: put up a calendar where you’ll see it every day. Mark it every time you prospect. Watch those marks add up day by day. There’s something special about seeing all those days stack up – keeps you motivated like nothing else.

Schedule It

Having a plan is cool and all, but if it’s not on your calendar and you’re not holding yourself to it, it’s just another todo list collecting dust. Your business ain’t gonna grow if you don’t make time for prospecting. Get it on the schedule. Block that time out. No phone calls during prospect time. Skip the email checking.

Kill those distractions dead. Focus on what you’re doing right now. This needs to become as normal as brushing your teeth. Schedule it and stick to it like glue. Be hardcore about it. If you’re gonna make calls, turn off everything except the phone you’re using for calls.

Put everything you’ve got into making those calls happen. That’s literally the only way to make this a habit. Schedule it, stick to it, just do the thing. Once you start seeing what this habit can do for you, you won’t wanna stop.

Leverage Your Commitment

Use leverage to make your commitment stick better. Simon talks about using consequences to keep your commitments solid. And yeah, I’m with him on that. Magic starts happening when you set up consequences for not sticking to your commitment. Think how awesome it’ll feel to reward yourself for staying committed, versus how much it would suck to give money to a charity you hate because you didn’t.

What if you combined both those ideas? Wouldn’t it be worth doing the work just to avoid giving money to a charity you don’t support?
Maybe get yourself a coach or accountability partner to keep you on track. Or find another agent who can keep you accountable while you do the same for them. Accountability is straight up one of the most powerful tools you’ve got for hitting your goals.

Just Do It

Nothing beats actually doing something. The longer you wait to start, the longer you wait for results. Take that jump and start dialing. You can spend all day thinking about it, but nothing happens until you actually do something. Look at it this way: if you wait till you feel ready to make calls, you’ll never start. Sometimes you gotta jump in before you feel ready. Take that first step and everything else follows. Making something a habit means doing it even when you don’t feel like it. You’ll be amazed how fast it becomes automatic.

Automate the Habit

After you’ve been at it for a while and seeing results, everything starts feeling more natural instead of forced. Now that you’re in the groove with this new habit, time to put it on autopilot. Instead of wondering when to make calls each day, focus on how many people you’re gonna contact.

Once you see what this habit can do, it gets way easier. You won’t need willpower anymore. It’ll feel good doing it, and you’ll actually want to. No more forcing yourself. It becomes part of who you are. You become part of it. Like you’re the same thing now.

Sure, you’ll need to adjust things as you go. Markets change, so you gotta stay flexible. But if you start thinking about automating the habit from day one, making changes gets way easier. And reaching prospects becomes smoother too. Think about it: how many times have you heard real estate is a contact sport? It’s so true! More contacts equals more deals. More deals means more money. More money means business growth. That prospecting habit? It’s your ticket to crushing it in real estate.

Final Thoughts

If you wanna make it in real estate, prospecting needs to be as normal as eating breakfast. Start by finding your why. Make that commitment. Tell everyone about it. Get it scheduled. Use that commitment to your advantage. Take action. Then automate it all. Once you get into it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start earlier. And I’ll be here cheering you on the whole way.
